Are you of the type who cant wait for the Firefox 3 final, nor can stay without installing your favorite add-ons into the Alpha 5... Read on to find out how to install every plugin found on the mozilla addon page (and elsewhere), almost flawlessly...
First the anatomy of a typical firefox plugin
The firefox pluign usually (and ours will) contain the following files:
- install.rdf
- chrome.manifest
- chrome(folder)
- defaults(folder)
Only the install.rdf is of our interest
Unpacking a Firefox plugin
We will go on with a very popular plugin called VideoDownloader which is currently certified to work only with Firefox: 1.5 – 2.0.0.* but we will get it to work with firefox... in just a few steps
First download the plugin (Direct Link) and also WinRAR (If you dont have it). Make a copy of the file(we will need the original). Next rename the plugin so that the extension is now *.zip Now right click on that file and extract to a folder. You should see the files install.rdf, chrome.manifest, etc.
We could modify the files here, but we cannot create the install package. So now revert to the original XPI file and follow the step below
Actually editing the plugin
Right click on the xpi file and click open > Select "Select a program from a list" > ok > select WinRAR in the list (it will be towards the bottom) > Uncheck "Always use the selected program....." > ok
Right click on the install.rdf and extract to a folder. Browse to that folder and open up the install.rdf with wordpad. you should see something like
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<RDF xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/02/22-rdf-syntax-ns#"
xmlns:em="http://www.mozilla.org/2004/em-rdf#">
.....
Ok. Now browse down to the line
<em:minVersion>1.5</em:minVersion>
<em:maxVersion>2.0.0.*</em:maxVersion>
Now change the <em:maxVersion... line to the following
<em:maxVersion>3.0.0.*</em:maxVersion>
Now save the file and close wordpad. Ensure that the xpi file is still open in winrar, then drag and drop the edited install.rdf into it. Make sure that the Update Mode is set to Add and Replace. Click ok.
Thats All, folks!
Installing the plugin
Simply drag drop our modified plugin into a blank Firefox 3 window and click install. Restart Firefox. Enjoy
Warnings
Firefox 3 is already damn buggy... if you want to install any plugin, it will get installed, but it may not work, or may be firefox may not wok, or may be everything will work. Be prepared to get 100s of warnings and stuff like that (because the alpha has been set into the debugging mode).
If you finished modding this plugin... go on with this one here, or download the already modified version of this plugin here.
Post you problems below...
